How to keep cool during a heatwave

When temperatures rise, keeping your home cool can become a challenge. Hot weather can make it harder to sleep, concentrate and feel comfortable, especially during prolonged periods of high temperatures.

At Theori Housing Management, we want tenants to feel comfortable and supported in their homes. While air conditioning is not common in many UK properties, there are several simple and effective ways to reduce heat and stay cooler during a heatwave.

Keep Sunlight Out During the Hottest Part of the Day

Sunlight coming through windows can quickly increase indoor temperatures. During the hottest parts of the day:

  • Keep curtains, blinds or shutters closed on windows that receive direct sunlight
  • Close windows when the outside temperature is higher than indoors
  • Open windows in the early morning and evening when the air is cooler

Keeping your home shaded can help prevent rooms from becoming overheated.

Improve Airflow Around Your Home

Good airflow can make a room feel cooler and more comfortable.

Try to:

  • Open windows on opposite sides of your home where possible to create a breeze
  • Use a fan to circulate air, but switch it off when you leave the room
  • Keep internal doors open to help air move through your home

If using a fan during very hot weather, placing a bowl of cold water or ice packs nearby can help circulate cooler air.

Stay Cool and Hydrated

Your body needs extra support during hot weather. Make sure you:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing
  • Take cool showers or baths if you feel too warm
  • Avoid spending long periods in direct sunlight

Look after yourself and check on family members, friends or neighbours who may be more vulnerable during extreme heat.

Use Appliances Wisely

Everyday appliances can create extra heat inside your home. During a heatwave:

  • Avoid using ovens where possible
  • Cook cooler meals such as salads or lighter dishes
  • Turn off electrical items when they are not needed
  • Use energy-efficient lighting where possible

Small changes can help reduce unnecessary heat build-up.

Keep Your Home Safe During Hot Weather

It is important not to make changes that could damage your home or create safety risks. Avoid:

  • Blocking ventilation areas
  • Covering smoke alarms or safety equipment
  • Leaving windows wide open if it creates a security risk
  • Using electrical equipment incorrectly

If you notice any issues with your home that are making it difficult to manage the heat, report them through the correct maintenance process.

Look After Yourself During Extreme Heat

Heatwaves can affect everyone, but some people are more at risk, including older people, young children and those with certain health conditions.

If temperatures become extreme:

  • Stay in the coolest parts of your home
  • Keep hydrated
  • Limit strenuous activity during the hottest times of the day
  • Seek advice if you feel unwell due to the heat

At Theori Housing Management, we are committed to supporting well-managed homes and positive living environments for tenants. By taking a few simple steps, you can help keep your home cooler, safer and more comfortable during hot weather.
